Marriage Ceremony Purpose

A marriage ceremony is a ceremony in which you commit to each other and make vows about how you intend to be and live together in the future.

It is a public declaration of love and commitment and is immensely powerful.

It creates a sacred bond between you that has the power to hold you together whatever life may throw at you on your married journey.

Outline of the Structure of the Ceremony

Introduction – After discussions with you, I talk about marriage and commitment – what this ceremony means to you both and some brief words about you e.g. how you met, any stories you would like to share.

  • Reading – any poems/readings you may wish to use. Usually a family member or friend is asked to participate here.

  • Monitum – the Legal section of the Ceremony – From the Marriage Act – words said in accordance with s46 Marriage Act.

  • The Asking – you get the opportunity to say ‘I do’.

  • Vows – this is an opportunity for you to say custom vows. This is also the section where you will exchange rings.

  • The Pronouncing – This is a very important part of the ceremony as this is where I declare you are married.

  • Signing of the Register – you both sign the register along with your two witnesses. This involves signing of the Legal documents.

  • Conclusion – I will conclude the ceremony and announce any further details you wish your guests to know. I will then close with words of congratulations and I will present you to family and friends as the newly married couple!
